Playtest Reflection!

Since this is a single-player game, I playtested the game alone as well as asked a friend of mine to play it and give me her feedback.

When playing it on my own, I found it a bit long. I think if I were to update it, I would add more tower pulls or even create new elements that make surviving harder and the playthroughs a bit shorter.

My friend pointed out that there was a lot of reminiscing on the past, and I totally agree. I think it may depend on what cards get pulled and which ones get left in the deck, but I do think it would be interesting to add more interaction with the camper and even with the unconscious friend.

She said her favourite part was building her own larger story by using the prompts as a sort-of starting point (she's a writer that likes choose-your-own-adventure games so I guess I picked the perfect playtester).  Her journal afterward felt like its own piece of literature and was very fun to read.

That was my favourite part of both my game and my playthrough of The Wretched; reading or listening back to the story created through prompts after playing was very rewarding. I do think my prompts were less engaging and interactive than they could have been, but either way, the player is encouraged to branch off of the written prompts if they get inspired.

It was overall a very fun experience and I definitely learned a lot about keeping a player engaged as well as writing an interesting story.
